FROM GARY SHELLY – PERSONAL TRAINER

Interesting (Sobering but interesting) Check these numbers out:
Burpees: 12 calories burned per minute
Battling ropes: 13 calories burned per minute
Jump rope: 15 calories burned per minute
Split jump squats: 11 calories burned per minute
Example: if you did burpees every day for 10 minutes (120 calories per day) for a total of 30 days you would only burn 3600 calories (it takes approx. 3500 calories to burn one pound of fat)
That is a lot of work for 3600 calories in one month to burn ONE pound of fat!!!! And, who wants to do burpees every day for 10 minutes for one month?
The point of this?
Do not count on workouts alone for fat loss.  You MUST clean up your diet! Use workouts to build strength, stamina, change your shape, increase metabolism and improve athletic performance.

TENNIS TIPS FOR THE MONTH
Serve Ball Toss Tennis Tips and Tricks
What if your toss is always “off” and thus your serve is always “off”? Here are several tennis tips that may help.
Do not hold the ball in your hand when you toss; hold it in your fingertips. Begin the toss in front of your legs. Toss the ball up and forward toward where you imagine your point of contact.
Do not flick the ball with your wrist as you let go; and, remember to release the ball with your hand at as high a spot as is comfortable, at least as high as your head. If there is a short distance between the release point and the contact point, there is less of a chance that the ball will go off course.
Make certain to toss the ball only as far as the height at which you’ll make contact, or a few inches higher. Higher tosses are more likely to stray, and even when they don’t, they’re more difficult to strike. Finally, reach after the ball with the arm with which you tossed it. These tennis tips should help you keep your toss on target.
Here’s the final bit of advice among the tennis tips for serving. If your opponent appears worn out after a long point, and is still catching his or her breathe, aim your next serve directly at his or her body. An opponent who is out of breathe will often make the return without taking required adjustment steps for returning a body serve.Aiming the ball at the receiver will often thus result in a weak return that then allows you to hit an aggressive shot back. This is among the easiest of tennis tips to ensure winning an extra point.

CARDIO TENNIS WITH NAOMI

Cardio tennis is a party on the court. It is a high intensity group fitness activity featuring the best tennis drills and games while providing the ultimate aerobic and anaerobic workout. The purpose of cardio tennis is to: train in your heart-rate zones, burn calories, and train for tennis. In cardio tennis, it is advised for players to wear heart monitors to determine what zones they’re in and how many calories they have burned.
There are six components that make it cardio tennis: 1) The three segments (warm-up, cardio, and cool down)2) Music3) Heart rate monitors4) The agility ladder5) cardio blast6) the right trained professional
Cardio tennis is played with low-compression tennis balls (orange balls) also called cardio balls. There are a number of reason why we use this type of balls and these are some of the benefits of using cardio balls:
• hitting longer rallies by not being able to put the ball away as quick
• balls bounce slower so it makes the players move better
• gives you time to set up properly and work on technique
• It works as a “equalizer” when it comes to having different levels on the court

Hope to see you there,
THURSDAYS AT 7PM
Thanks,
Naomi and William

• Clay is Cooler as it retains the moisture during hot summer days, keeping the surface an average 20% cooler than hard courts
• The ball bounce on clay is slower which means more time to get to the shot during rallies  • Allows players to slide into shots, reducing stress on the body.
• Unlike hard courts, players can be on clay courts in a matter of minutes after a rain shower

FROM GARY SHELLY-PERSONAL TRAINER
Over-training or Over-straining
Great article from Precision Nutrition:
Sometimes, less is more. Putting in a consistent good effort over the long haul is much more sustainable than cycles of “crash and burn” Do what truly works. Look, if “pump till you puke” and hours of treadmill torture worked, we’d make our clients do it.But it doesn’t work.So we don’t do it. Exercise should make us feel, look, perform and live better… not crush us. Movement should help us function freely… not incapacitate us.

What if you could leave the gym feeling energized, not exhausted? What if, instead of doing more, you could do better?

Recovery: Overtraining antidote. Here’s your first tip: “Over-training” isn’t exactly the problem. The problem is more like “under-recovering”. Your body can actually handle a tremendous amount of work… if you recover properly and fully from that work.

Your stress-recovery pattern should look like rolling hills: For every up (training or life stress) there’s a down (recovery). For every intense workout, there’s an equally intense focus on activities that help your body repair and rebuild.
